If x + 1/x = -1, find the value of x^5 + 1/x^5 + 4(x^3 + 1/x^3).

Correct answer: 7

Solution

From x + 1/x = -1 we get x^2 + x + 1 = 0, hence x^3 = 1. Then x^3 + 1/x^3 = 2 and x^5 + 1/x^5 = x^2 + 1/x^2 = -1. The total is -1 + 4(2) = 7.
