A tank contains Strawberry, Blueberry and Raspberry juices in the ratio 6 : 9 : 5. After 40 litres of the mixture is removed, 15 litres of strawberry and 10 litres of raspberry juice are added. If the final amount of blueberry juice is 22 litres more than the final amount of strawberry juice, what was the approximate initial quantity of mixture (in litres)?

Correct answer: 287

Solution

Shares are 6/20, 9/20, 5/20 of M. After removing 40 L and adding back, strawberry = 0.3M + 3 and blueberry = 0.45M - 18. Setting their difference to 22 gives 0.15M = 43, so M is about 287 litres.
