Two grades of wheat, costing Rs. 90 per kg and Rs. 135 per kg, are blended in an unknown ratio. The mixture is sold at Rs. 150 per kg, yielding a 25% profit on its cost price. In what ratio were the two grades mixed?

Correct answer: 1 : 2

Solution

Selling at Rs. 150 with 25% profit gives mixture cost = 150/1.25 = Rs. 120 per kg. By alligation, ratio = (135-120):(120-90) = 15:30 = 1:2.
