If m + 1/m = 6, what is the value of m^4 + 1/m^4?

Solution

Squaring m + 1/m = 6 gives m^2 + 1/m^2 = 36 - 2 = 34. Squaring again gives m^4 + 1/m^4 = 34^2 - 2 = 1156 - 2 = 1154.
