A tank holds liquids A, B and C mixed in the ratio 8 : 6 : 4. First, 30 litres of the mixture is removed; then 12 litres of A and 8 litres of C are poured in. In the resulting mixture, the amount of A exceeds the amount of B by 20 litres. Find the original total volume of liquid in the tank.
- 106L
- 172L
- 102L
- 190L
Correct answer: 102L
Solution
With total V, A = 8V/18 and B = 6V/18. Draining 30 L removes them in ratio, and adding 12 L of A gives the equation (8V/18 - 240/18 + 12) - (6V/18 - 180/18) = 20, which yields V = 102 L.
