A vessel contains three liquids X, Y and Z mixed in the ratio 3 : 4 : 5. After 8 litres of X, 10 litres of Y and a certain quantity of Z are added, the ratio becomes 7 : 9 : 12. Find the quantity of Z (in litres) that was added.

  1. 11 litres
  2. 14 litres
  3. 16 litres
  4. 18 litres

Correct answer: 14 litres

Solution

Using (3k+8)/(4k+10) = 7/9 gives 27k+72 = 28k+70, so k=2. Original amounts are 6, 8, 10. After addition X=14, and the 7:9:12 ratio requires Z = 24, so Z added = 24-10 = 14 litres.
