Arun ordered 8 kg of type-A sugar plus some kilograms of type-B sugar. Type-A costs twice as much per kg as type-B. On delivery the two quantities were swapped, which raised the bill by 35%. What was the original ratio of type-A to type-B quantity?

Correct answer: 13 : 34

Solution

With B at price 1 and A at price 2, original bill = 16 + x and swapped bill = 2x + 8. Setting 2x+8 = 1.35(16+x) gives x = 20.92, so 8 : x = 13 : 34.
