In triangle MNO, segment LK is drawn parallel to NO. If the area of triangle MLK to the area of trapezium LKNO is 9 : 40, find the ratio ML : LN.

Solution

Triangle MLK to trapezium is 9 : 40, so triangle MLK to whole triangle MNO is 9 : 49. The side ratio ML : MN equals sqrt(9/49) = 3 : 7, hence ML : LN = 3 : 4.
