If t = sqrt(6) + 3, what is the value of t^2 - 6*sqrt(6)?

Solution

t^2 = (sqrt6 + 3)^2 = 6 + 6*sqrt6 + 9 = 15 + 6*sqrt6. Subtracting 6*sqrt6 leaves 15.
