Two parallel metal plates having charges +Q and -Q face each other at a certain distance between them. If the plates are now dipped in kerosene oil tank, the electric field between the plates will:
- remain same
- become zero
- increases
- decrease
Correct answer: decrease
Solution
When the plates are dipped in kerosene oil, the dielectric constant of kerosene reduces the effective electric field between the plates. This happens because the dielectric reduces the net electric field by polarizing and opposing the field created by the charges on the plates.
