On observing light from three different stars P, Q and R, it was found that intensity of violet colour is maximum in the spectrum of P, the intensity of green colour is maximum in the spectrum of R and the intensity of red colour is maximum in the spectrum of Q. If Tₚ, T₀ and Tᵣ are the respective absolute temperature of P, Q and R, then it can be concluded from the above observations that

1. Tₚ > Tᵣ > T₀
2. Tₚ > T₀ > Tᵣ
3. Tₚ < T₀ < Tᵣ
4. Tₚ > T₀ > Tᵣ

Correct answer: Tₚ > T₀ > Tᵣ

Solution

According to Wien's displacement law, the wavelength at which the intensity of radiation is maximum is inversely proportional to the absolute temperature of the black body. Violet light has the shortest wavelength, followed by green, and then red. Thus, Tₚ > T₀ > Tᵣ.
