A monkey of mass 20 kg is holding a vertical rope. The rope will not break when a mass of 25 kg is suspended from it but will break if the mass exceeds 25 kg. What is the maximum acceleration with which the monkey can climb up along the rope? (g = 10 m/s²)
- 2.5 m/s²
- 5 m/s²
- 10 m/s²
- 25 m/s²
Correct answer: 5 m/s²
Solution
The maximum tension the rope can handle is equivalent to the weight of a 25 kg mass, i.e., T = 25 × 10 = 250 N. For the monkey to climb with maximum acceleration, the net force on the monkey is T - mg = ma. Substituting values: 250 - (20 × 10) = 20a, solving gives a = 5 m/s².
