In an experiment four quantities a, b, c and d are measured with percentage error 1%, 2%, 3% and 4% respectively. Quantity P is calculated as follows P = a³ b² / cd. % error in P is:

1. 10%
2. 7%
3. 4%
4. 14%

Correct answer: 10%

Solution

The percentage error in a derived quantity is calculated by summing the weighted percentage errors of the individual quantities. For P = a³b²/cd, the total percentage error is 3(1%) + 2(2%) + 3% + 4% = 10%.
