A centigrade and a Fahrenheit thermometer are dipped in boiling water. The water temperature is lowered until the Fahrenheit thermometer registers 140°. What is the fall in temperature as registered by the Centigrade thermometer?

1. 80°
2. 60°
3. 40°
4. 30°

Correct answer: 60°

Solution

The relationship between Fahrenheit (F) and Celsius (C) is given by F = (9/5)C + 32. Initially, at boiling water, C = 100° and F = 212°. When F = 140°, solving for C gives C = (5/9)(140 - 32) = 60°. The fall in temperature is 100° - 60° = 40°.
