A man throws balls with the same speed vertically upwards one after the other at an interval of 2 seconds. What should be the speed of the throw so that more than two balls are in the sky at any time? [Given g = 9.8 m/s^2]

  1. (a) Only with speed 19.6 m/s
  2. (b) More than 19.6 m/s
  3. (c) At least 9.8 m/s
  4. (d) Any speed less than 19.6 m/s

Correct answer: (b) More than 19.6 m/s

Solution

The time a ball stays in the air is given by T = 2u/g. For more than two balls to be in the air, T > 2 seconds. Solving 2u/g > 2 gives u > 19.6 m/s. Thus, the speed must be more than 19.6 m/s.
