A uniform electric field and a uniform magnetic field are acting along the same direction in a certain region. If an electron is projected along the direction of the fields with a certain velocity then
- its velocity will increase
- its velocity will decrease
- it will turn towards left of its motion
- it will turn towards right of its motion
Correct answer: its velocity will decrease
Solution
For an electron moving along the common direction of E and B, the magnetic force is zero because v is parallel to B. The electric force on an electron is opposite to E, so if it is projected along the field direction, the force opposes its motion and its speed decreases.
