The current flowing in a coil of resistance 90 is to be reduced by 90%. What resistance should be connected in parallel with it?

Solution

If the current through the 90 coil is reduced by 90%, the coil should carry only one-tenth of its original current. For the same voltage, this means the equivalent resistance of the parallel combination must become 10 times the coil resistance, which gives the shunt as 10 .
