If two balls each of mass 0.06 kg move in opposite directions with speed 4 m/s and collide and rebound with the same speed, then the impulse imparted to each ball by the other is:
- 0.48 kg-m/s
- 0.24 kg-m/s
- 0.81 kg-m/s
- Zero
Correct answer: 0.48 kg-m/s
Solution
For each ball, the velocity changes from $+4$ m/s to $-4$ m/s or vice versa, so $\Delta v=8$ m/s. Thus impulse $J=m\Delta v=0.06\times8=0.48$ kg-m/s.
