In general alkyl haldies are insolube in water. The main reason is:
- they are slightly polar
- they do not form hydrogen bonds with \( H_{2} \) O
- the halogen end is repelled by water
- they are unreactive compounds
Correct answer: they do not form hydrogen bonds with \( H_{2} \) O
Solution
Alkyl halides may have a polar bond, but they cannot make strong hydrogen bonds with water. Since water is stabilized by hydrogen bonding, substances that cannot participate in it are generally poorly soluble.
