Consider the following reaction: Phenol → Z (dust Zn) → CH3Cl (Anhydrous AlCl3) → Y Alkaline KMnO4 → Z The product Z is:

  1. benzaldehyde
  2. benzoic acid
  3. benzene
  4. toluene

Correct answer: benzene

Solution

Phenol is reduced to benzene (Z) when treated with dust Zn. Benzene reacts with CH3Cl in the presence of anhydrous AlCl3 to form toluene (Y). Alkaline KMnO4 oxidizes toluene back to benzoic acid (Z). Thus, Z is benzene.
