Solubility of a M2S salt is 3.5 × 10⁻⁶, then its solubility product will be
- 1.7 × 10⁻¹⁶
- 1.7 × 10⁻⁶
- 1.7 × 10⁻¹⁸
- 1.7 × 10⁻¹²
Correct answer: 1.7 × 10⁻¹⁶
Solution
For a salt M2S, the dissociation is M2S ⇌ 2M⁺ + S²⁻. If solubility is 's', then Ksp = [M⁺]²[S²⁻] = (2s)²(s) = 4s³. Substituting s = 3.5 × 10⁻⁶, Ksp = 4(3.5 × 10⁻⁶)³ = 1.7 × 10⁻¹⁶.
