A dipole with moment p = (-i - 3j + 2k) × 10⁻²⁹ C.m sits at the origin. At the position r = i + 3j + 5k (note that r. p = 0, so the point lies on the equatorial plane of the dipole), the electric field produced by the dipole is parallel to which vector?

  1. (-i + 3j - 2k)
  2. (i - 3j - 2k)
  3. (i + 3j - 2k)
  4. (-i - 3j + 2k)

Correct answer: (i + 3j - 2k)

Solution

When r. p = 0 the observation point lies on the equatorial plane. There the dipole field is E_eq = (1/(4*pi*ε0)) * (-p)/r³, which is directed opposite to p. Since p = (-i - 3j + 2k)×10⁻²⁹, the field is parallel to -p = (i + 3j - 2k).
