For a given electric dipole, the magnitude of the field at a distance x along the axial line equals the magnitude of the field at a distance y along the equatorial line. Find the ratio x: y.

Solution

The axial field is twice the equatorial field at the same distance. Equating axial field at x with equatorial field at y gives 2/x³ = 1/y³, so (x/y)³ = 2 and x/y = 2^(1/3).
