A coil draws 4 A when connected to a 12 V dc source. When the same coil is connected to a 12 V, 50 rad/s ac source, the current falls to 2.4 A. Find the inductance of the coil. Also find the power delivered if a 2500 microF capacitor is connected in series with the coil on the ac source.

  1. L = 0.08 H, P = 17.28 W
  2. L = 0.04 H, P = 17.28 W
  3. L = 0.08 H, P = 28.8 W
  4. L = 0.16 H, P = 8.64 W

Correct answer: L = 0.08 H, P = 17.28 W

Solution

DC: R = 12/4 = 3 ohm. AC: Z = 12/2.4 = 5 ohm, so X_L = sqrt(5² - 3²) = 4 ohm and L = X_L/omega = 4/50 = 0.08 H. Adding C: X_C = 1/(50*2500e-6) = 8 ohm... net reactance |X_L - X_C| = 4, Z = 5 ohm again, I = 2.4 A, P = I²*R = 2.4² * 3 = 17.28 W.
