Two identical capacitors are connected first one after the other in series and then side by side in parallel. What is the ratio of the equivalent capacitance in the two arrangements?

Solution

Two identical capacitors C in series give C/2; in parallel give 2C. Ratio series:parallel = (C/2):(2C) = 1:4.
