In a measurement experiment, four quantities a, b, c and d have percentage errors of 1%, 2%, 3% and 4%, respectively. If a derived quantity is given by P = a³ b² / (c d), what is the percentage error in P?

  1. 10%
  2. 7%
  3. 4%
  4. 14%

Correct answer: 14%

Solution

For P = a^3 b^2 /(c d), %error = 3*1 + 2*2 + 1*3 + 1*4 = 3 + 4 + 3 + 4 = 14%.
