Which of the following compounds does NOT contain any sp2 hybridised carbon atom?
- Acetamide
- Acetic acid
- Acetonitrile
- Acetone
Correct answer: Acetonitrile
Solution
Acetamide (CH3CONH2), acetic acid (CH3COOH) and acetone (CH3COCH3) each contain a carbonyl carbon (C=O) which is sp2 hybridised. Acetonitrile (CH3-C(triple bond)N) has its functional carbon triple-bonded to nitrogen, making that carbon sp hybridised; the methyl carbon is sp3. So acetonitrile has no sp2 carbon.
