ExamsJEE MainChemistry

Consider two statements. Statement I: On heating at 573 K, potassium permanganate converts to potassium manganate. Statement II: Both potassium permanganate and potassium manganate are tetrahedral and paramagnetic. Choose the most appropriate option.

  1. Statement I is true but statement II is false
  2. Both statement I and statement II are true
  3. Statement I is false but statement II is true
  4. Both statement I and statement II are false

Correct answer: Statement I is true but statement II is false

Solution

Statement I is correct (KMnO4 -> K2MnO4 on heating). Statement II is wrong because permanganate (d0) is diamagnetic, only manganate (d1) is paramagnetic; so not both are paramagnetic.
