The intermolecular potential-energy curves for the pairs A-A, A-B, A-C and A-D are plotted as a function of internuclear separation. Based on the shapes and depths of these curves, which one of the following conclusions is correct?
- D is more electronegative than the other atoms
- A-D has the shortest bond length
- A-B has the stiffest bond
- A-A has the largest bond enthalpy
Correct answer: A-B has the stiffest bond
Solution
The stiffness of a bond is measured by the curvature of the potential well at its equilibrium point; the A-B curve has the sharpest (narrowest) well, so it has the highest force constant and is the stiffest bond.
