ExamsJEE MainChemistry

Given below are two statements : Statement-I : The first ionization enthalpy of Cr is lower than that of Mn. Statement-II : The second and third ionization enthalpies of Cr are higher than those of Mn. In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below. (1) Both Statement-I and Statement-II are false. (2) Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false. (3) Both Statement-I and Statement-II are true. (4) Statement-I is false but Statement-II is true.

  1. Both Statement-I and Statement-II are false.
  2. Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false.
  3. Both Statement-I and Statement-II are true.
  4. Statement-I is false but Statement-II is true.

Correct answer: Statement-I is true but Statement-II is false.

Solution

The first ionization enthalpy of chromium (Cr) is indeed lower than that of manganese (Mn) due to its electron configuration, which makes it easier to remove the outermost electron. However, the second and third ionization enthalpies of Cr are not higher than those of Mn, as Mn has a more stable half-filled d-subshell, making subsequent ionizations less energetically demanding.
