Given below are two statements : Statement (I) : In octahedral complexes, when Δo < P high spin complex are formed. Statement (II) : In tetrahedral complexes because of Δt < P, low spin complexes are rarely formed. In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :
- Both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct
- Statement-I is correct but Statement-II is incorrect
- Both Statement-I and Statement-II are incorrect
- Statement-I is incorrect but Statement-II is correct
Correct answer: Both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct
Solution
Both statements accurately describe the behavior of electron configurations in octahedral and tetrahedral complexes. In octahedral complexes, a low crystal field splitting energy (Δo) relative to pairing energy (P) leads to high spin complexes, while in tetrahedral complexes, the smaller splitting energy (Δt) compared to pairing energy results in a rarity of low spin complexes.
