Ammolysis of Alkyl halides followed by treatment with NaOH solution can be used to prepare primary, secondary and tertiary amines. The purpose of NaOH in the reaction is:

  1. to remove basic impurities
  2. to activate NH3 used in the reaction
  3. to remove acidic impurities
  4. to increase the reactivity of alkyl halide

Correct answer: to remove acidic impurities

Solution

Ammonolysis gives the amine as its hydrohalide salt (R-NH3+ X-). NaOH neutralises the HX / acidic by-product, freeing the neutral amine. So its purpose is to remove acidic impurities.
