Two closed bulbs of equal volume (V) containing an ideal gas initially at pressure p1 and temperature T1 are connected through a narrow tube of negligible volume. The temperature of one of the bulbs is then raised to T2. The final pressure p_f is:
- 2p1 (T2/(T1 + T2))
- 2p1 (T1T2/(T1 + T2))
- p1 (T1T2/(T1 + T2))
- 2p1 (T1/(T1 + T2))
Correct answer: 2p1 (T2/(T1 + T2))
Solution
Total moles are conserved: 2 p1 V/(R T1) = pf V/(R T1) + pf V/(R T2). Solving gives pf = 2 p1 T2/(T1 + T2).
