Equal amounts (in moles) of hydrogen gas and oxygen gas are kept in a vessel that has a tiny pinhole, allowing both gases to effuse out. By the time one-half of the hydrogen has escaped, what fraction of the oxygen has escaped?

  1. 1/8
  2. 1/4
  3. 3/8
  4. 1/2

Correct answer: 1/8

Solution

Rate ratio = sqrt(32/2) = 4, so when half (0.5) of H2 has escaped, the fraction of O2 escaped is 0.5/4 = 1/8, not 1/4.
