What is the density, in g mL⁻¹, of a 3.60 M solution of sulphuric acid that contains 29% H2SO4 by mass? (Molar mass of H2SO4 = 98 g mol⁻¹)

  1. 1.45
  2. 1.64
  3. 1.88
  4. 1.22

Correct answer: 1.22

Solution

In 1 L: moles = 3.60, mass H2SO4 = 3.60*98 = 352.8 g. This is 29% by mass, so solution mass = 352.8/0.29 = 1216.5 g per litre. Density = 1216.5 g / 1000 mL = 1.22 g/mL.
