At 25°C, a gas X at 1 atm is passed through a solution that contains both 1 M Y and M Z. If the standard reduction potentials satisfy Z > Y > X, which statement is correct?
- Y will oxidize X but not Z
- Y will oxidize Z but not X
- Y will oxidize both X and Z
- Y will reduce both X and Z
Correct answer: Y will oxidize X but not Z
Solution
A species oxidizes another only if its own reduction potential is higher. With Z > Y > X, Y has a higher reduction potential than X (so Y oxidizes X) but lower than Z (so Y cannot oxidize Z). Hence 'Y will oxidize X but not Z.'
