A solution is prepared by dissolving 120 g of a substance with molecular mass 60 in 1000 g of water. If the density of the resulting solution is 1.12 g/mL, what is its molarity?
- 1.00 M
- 2.00 M
- 2.50 M
- 4.00 M
Correct answer: 2.00 M
Solution
Moles of solute = 120/60 = 2 mol. Total mass of solution = 120 + 1000 = 1120 g, so volume = 1120/1.12 = 1000 mL = 1 L. Therefore molarity = 2/1 = 2.00 M.
