A block performs damped harmonic oscillation with (period) T. Which statements are correct? (1) Time taken to go from an extreme to the mean position is T/4. (2) Time taken to go from one extreme to the other is T/2. (3) Time taken to go from one extreme to the other is less than T/2. (4) Time taken to go from one extreme to the other is more than T/2.
- 1,2 only
- 1,2,3 only
- 2 only
- 1,2,4 only
Correct answer: 1,2 only
Solution
Although amplitude decays in damped SHM, the (damped) period T is constant. The block reaches the mean position a quarter period after an extreme, and consecutive extremes are separated by half a period. So statements (1) and (2) are correct.
