Four ice cubes, each 2 cm x 2 cm x 2 cm, are removed from a freezer and placed into 200 mL of a drink at 10 deg C. Assume no heat exchange with surroundings and a container of negligible heat capacity. (Density of ice = 900 kg/m³, density of drink = 1000 kg/m³, specific heat of drink = 4200 J/(kg*K), latent heat of fusion of ice = 3.4 * 10⁵ J/kg.) Which statement is correct?

  1. Final temperature of the drink is 0 deg C
  2. Final temperature of the drink is 1.1 deg C
  3. Amount of ice melted is 28.8 g
  4. Amount of ice melted is 25 g

Correct answer: Final temperature of the drink is 0 deg C

Solution

The drink can release only about 8400 J cooling to 0 deg C, far less than the ~9800 J needed to melt all the ice, so ice remains and the equilibrium temperature is 0 deg C.
