Two identical beakers are filled to the same level with water at 4 degC. Beaker A is then heated and beaker B is cooled. What happens to the water levels?

  1. water level in A will rise
  2. water level in B will rise
  3. water level in A will fall
  4. water level in B will fall

Correct answer: water level in A will rise

Solution

Water has minimum volume at 4 degC, so heating A above 4 degC expands the water and its level rises (and cooling B below 4 degC also expands it, raising B as well); the level in A rises.
