A 2.5 kg block is heated to 500 deg C and then placed on a large slab of ice at 0 deg C. Approximately what maximum mass of ice can melt? (Specific heat of the block = 0.1 cal/g/deg C, latent heat of fusion of ice = 80 cal/g.)

  1. 1 kg
  2. 1.5 kg
  3. 2 kg
  4. 2.5 kg

Correct answer: 1.5 kg

Solution

The block releasing heat as it cools from 500 deg C to 0 deg C provides Q = 2500*0.1*500 = 125000 cal, melting Q/80 ~ 1562 g of ice.
