Two marks 10 cm apart on a glass rod move 0.06 mm farther apart when the rod is heated from 0 deg C to 10 deg C. A flask made of the same glass holds 1000 cc at 0 deg C. What volume does the flask measure at 100 deg C?

  1. 1018 cc
  2. 918 cc
  3. 818 cc
  4. 718 cc

Correct answer: 1018 cc

Solution

alpha = 0.06/(100*10) = 6e-5 per deg C, so gamma = 18e-5; volume change = 1000 * 18e-5 * 100 = 18 cc, giving 1018 cc.
