Container X has volume double that of container Y. Both containers are connected by a thin tube and filled with the same ideal gas. Temperature of X is 200 K and temperature of Y is 400 K. If the mass of gas in X is m, what is the mass of gas in Y?
- m/8
- m/6
- m/4
- m/2
Correct answer: m/4
Solution
At equilibrium, pressure P is equal in both containers. Number of moles n = PV/(RT). So n_X/n_Y = (V_X * T_Y)/(V_Y * T_X) = (2V * 400)/(V * 200) = 4. Since mass = n * M (same molar mass), m_Y = m_X / 4 = m/4.
