A rod of length 2 m at 0 deg C has a linear thermal expansion coefficient alpha = (3x + 2) * 10⁻⁶ per deg C, where x is the distance in cm from one end of the rod. Find the length of the rod at 20 deg C.

  1. 2.124 m
  2. 3.24 m
  3. 2.0120 m
  4. 3.124 m

Correct answer: 2.0120 m

Solution

Delta_L (in cm) = Delta_T * integral₀²⁰⁰ (3x+2)*10⁻⁶ dx = 20 * 10⁻⁶ * [1.5x² + 2x] from 0 to 200 = 20 * 10⁻⁶ * (1.5*40000 + 400) = 20 * 10⁻⁶ * 60400 = 1.208 cm = 0.01208 m. Final length = 2 + 0.01208 = 2.01208 m ≈ 2.0120 m.
