Two coherent light sources have intensities in the ratio 2x: 1. Find the value of (I_max - I_min) / (I_max + I_min) for the interference pattern they produce.
- 2*sqrt(2x) / (x+1)
- 2*sqrt(2x) / (2x+1)
- sqrt(2x) / (x+1)
- sqrt(2x) / (2x+1)
Correct answer: 2*sqrt(2x) / (2x+1)
Solution
For two coherent sources with intensities I1 = 2x and I2 = 1, the numerator I_max - I_min = 4*sqrt(2x) and the denominator I_max + I_min = 2(2x+1). Dividing gives 2*sqrt(2x)/(2x+1).
