In a Young's double slit experiment, the two slits are separated by 0.5 mm and a screen is placed 100 cm away. The 9th bright fringe is found to be 9.0 mm away from the 2nd dark fringe (both measured from the centre of the pattern on the same side). What is the wavelength of the light used?
- 2000 A
- 4000 A
- 6000 A
- 8000 A
Correct answer: 6000 A
Solution
The 9th bright fringe is at y = 9*lambda*D/d and the 2nd dark fringe is at y = 1.5*lambda*D/d. Their separation is 7.5*lambda*D/d = 9.0 mm, giving lambda = 9.0e-3 * 0.5e-3 / (7.5 * 1.0) = 6*10⁻⁷ m = 6000 A.
