For complex numbers z satisfying |z + 3| <= 3, find the maximum and minimum values of |z + 1| (given as the ordered pair (max, min)).

  1. (5, 0)
  2. (6, 0)
  3. (7, 1)
  4. (5, 1)

Correct answer: (5, 0)

Solution

The point -1 lies at distance 2 from the center -3, and since 2 < 3 the point -1 is inside the disk; hence min |z+1| = 0 and max = distance to farthest boundary point = 2 + 3 = 5.
