A line segment joins A(-3, 2, 4) and B(0, 4, 7). Find the coordinates of the two points that trisect this line segment (divide it into three equal parts).
- (-2, 8/3, 5) and (-1, 10/3, 6)
- (-1, 8/3, 5) and (-2, 10/3, 6)
- (-2, 10/3, 6) and (-1, 8/3, 5)
- (-2, 8/3, 5) and (0, 4, 7)
Correct answer: (-2, 8/3, 5) and (-1, 10/3, 6)
Solution
Trisection points P1 and P2 divide AB internally in ratios 1:2 and 2:1 respectively from A. Applying the section formula gives P1=(-2, 8/3, 5) and P2=(-1, 10/3, 6).
