Arrange the following alkyl groups in decreasing order of their inductive (electron-releasing, +I) effect: tert-butyl (CH3)3C-, isopropyl (CH3)2CH-, and ethyl CH3CH2-.

  1. (CH3)3C- > (CH3)2CH- > CH3CH2-
  2. CH3CH2- > (CH3)2CH- > (CH3)3C-
  3. (CH3)2CH- > CH3CH2- > (CH3)3C-
  4. None of these

Correct answer: (CH3)3C- > (CH3)2CH- > CH3CH2-

Solution

The +I (electron-releasing inductive) effect increases with the number of electron-donating alkyl substituents attached to the carbon bearing the bond. tert-Butyl has three methyls, isopropyl two, ethyl one, giving the order tert-butyl > isopropyl > ethyl.
