For the zero order reaction 2NH3(g) -> N2(g) + 3H2(g), the rate of reaction is 0.1 atm/s. Initially only NH3 is present at a pressure of 3 atm. Find the total pressure (atm) at t = 10 s.

  1. 3.5
  2. 4.0
  3. 4.5
  4. 5.0

Correct answer: 5.0

Solution

With rate of reaction 0.1 atm/s, the extent xi after 10 s is 1 atm, so NH3 falls by 2 atm to 1 atm, N2 = 1 atm and H2 = 3 atm, giving total 5 atm.
